interview with Binary Creed done by Patrick and Gaz
1.Hello how are things going in Sweden these days? Please introduce yourselves to the readers?
We're fine here in Sweden. Fall has come and the leaves are turning yellow and starting to fall. Makes for a different perspective when you're outdoors. Binary Creed has been around since 2013 and we're a bunch of seasoned musicians that are teaming up to make timeless and thought worthy metal.
2. Binary Creed formed in 2013 what gave you the idea to start this band? And how did you all choose the name Binary Creed for the band?
That's right. We started as a duo with Stefan and me. We wrote the music for our first album Restitution and also recorded it at home. The final touches we did in a proper studio, though. Me and Stefan had a lot of ideas that came to fruition on that album! The name is taken from a Hollow song from the album Architect of the Mind. I used to play guitar and sing in Hollow in the 90's and it alludes to our technological age and also that we have a firm belief in science and the secular. A lot of listeners think we are a Christian band because of the word "creed", but you need to put it into a non-religious context here. I would describe myself as a secularist, in private and in my lyrics.
3.What is the current line up of the band?
The band consists of Stefan Rådlund on guitar, myself on vocals and guitars, Peo Olofsson, keyboards and Robert Alenius on the bass guitar. We use a session drummer when we play live. A lot of different music inspires! I listen to metal of different kinds and I would like to mention Swedish act Opeth, Mastodon, Lamb of God and Finnish Tarot. But not only metal inspires since I also listen to jazz, classical music and of course a lot of songs that my kids introduce me to. I've grown to like Tool and also Highly Suspect through them.
4.Battle Won is the bands newest release how long did it take the band to write the music for the new release?
We worked on the album for roughly a year.
5.Who usually takes care of writing the lyrics for the music and what are some topics written about on Battle Won?
I write all the lyrics and all vocal melodies. A Battle Won could take place in modern day Syria and the topic is among others standing up for your beliefs (not religious ones, though ;-)) and trying to make a better life for yourself and your loved ones. Taking a stand against violence and war is another topic. The final track on the album also reflects my view on our brief time here on Earth. The only legacy and the only afterlife we have is the one we pass on through our deeds and those who survive us.
What have been some of the bands most memorable shows over the years?
Not that often. A few shows each year is what we aim for. We do this in our spare time and we also have families to take into consideration. The release parties for our albums stand out, especially the last one where we shared the stage with Fate's Right Band with Johnny Lindqvist on the vocals. It's great that his other band, Nocturnal Rites, are back in business!
7.Are their any tours or shows planned in support of the new release if yes where will the band be playing?
Not at the moment. We'll of course inform our fans asap when the next gig is booked! Keep a lookout on our Facebook page!
8.Has the band ever made a video for any of their songs if yes what songs have you done?
We've done a couple of videos and you can find them on our Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAml4RX9aMx9bODkHnJ79NA/featured
The most recent is one with one of the ideas we're working with for the next album.
9.If you had the opportunity to make a video for any of the bands songs which song would you like to see made into a video?
Perhaps the last one on the album, Journey Without End, since it kind of sums the album up. Plus has a positive vibe to it.
10.Besides the new release does the band have any other releases or merchandise available for the readers? If yes what is available and where can the readers buy it?
We sell a little merchandise on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/binarycreed/
11.When not working on new music or band business what do you like to do in your free time?
I train my youngest daughter's soccer team but apart from that I like to watch good television, such as Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Right now I don't read much but when I can I really enjoy Iain Banks fiction.
12.Besides metal and rock do you or any of the members listen to any other underground genres? If yes what are some of your favorite bands and artists?
I can only speak for myself and I think I answered that question previously.
13.Other then music we are huge movie fans here do you like to watch movies?Do you have a favorite genre?
I really like sci-fi. The Arrival and Interstellar were good films. But I also like other genres. The most recent one was John Boorman's Excalibur from 1981. Looking forward to the new Blade Runner movie.
14.What are your all-time favorite movies? And who are some of your favorite actress's and actor's?
That changes over time. I like Ridley Scott's Alien and have seen that one a couple of times. William Hurt is mostly good and I also thoroughly enjoy Zach
Braff's work as a director (and actor).
15.Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final words for the readers?
Take care of each other! Use sun-protection.
